“Each year more than 600,000 Americans return to their communities after serving time in state or federal prisons. Despite that number, there are limited programs to assist and support the formerly incarcerated in making the transition back to their communities. The return to society after incarceration can be a challenging road for many. Formerly incarcerated people face a unique set of issues all at once, from opening a bank account to getting a job and finding a safe place to live. “Writer: Danielle Kiser “Formerly Incarcerated Financial Education & Resources”

MEDICATION- ASSISTED TREATMENT (MAT)

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) refers to three FDA-approved and evidencebased pharmacological approaches to treating opioid use disorders (OUDs) full agonist (e.g., methadone), partial agonist (e.g., buprenorphine), and antagonist (e.g., naltrexone). MAT-capable  recovery residences can use a mixed population approach, in which both MAT users and non-MAT users live in the same household, or a MAT-specific approach.

WORK OPPORTUNITY BY PENNY’S RECOVERY HOUSE

Finding work is one of the most difficult challenges that ex-convicts face. Getting a job is
frequently a requirement for parolees. It’s not as simple as that, as formers frequently have to
explain the gap in their work experience by delving into why they were incarcerated.
Penny’s Recovery House is ready to meet the challenge assisting individuals with housing, readiness
skills and employment.

RECOVERY RESIDENCES BY PENNY’S RECOVERY HOUSE

Returning to the community from prison or jail presents and inordinate number of obstacles related to employment, housing, health treatment, behavioral issues and family reunion. Formerly incarcerated individuals reported that their incarceration negatively their ability to obtain stable housing.

Penny’s Recovery House adhere the social model and provide a family-like living environment free of alcohol and illicit drug use, centered on peer support and connections that promote long-term substance-use recovery.

Housing

Returning to the community from prison or jail presents a significant number of obstacles related to employment, housing, treatment for health and behavioral health issues, and family reunification. Homelessness can contribute to recidivism, as it complicates other areas of intervention for parolees. Former parolees have reported that their incarceration negatively affected their ability to obtain stable housing. The lack of affordable housing options leaves them competing for limited resources with those who have no criminal history. Penny's recovery house addresses this challenge by providing individuals with not only a place to live, but also a recovery plan that includes support for achieving stable housing.

Employment

Employment is a critical factor in the successful reentry of parolees into society. Not only is it a requirement for parolees, but it also provides a sense of purpose and self-worth, as well as a means to support oneself and one's family. However, finding employment can be a significant challenge for parolees.

One major obstacle is the stigma associated with having a criminal record. Many employers are hesitant to hire someone with a criminal history, despite the fact that research shows that ex-offenders who are employed are less likely to recidivate. This can make it difficult for ex-offenders to find work, even if they have relevant skills and experience.

Another challenge is the lack of social capital among parolees. Many have limited networks and contacts, which can make it difficult to find job opportunities. Additionally, some parolees may have limited education and job skills, which can also make it difficult to find work.

At Penny's recovery house, we understand the importance of employment in the reentry process and are dedicated to assisting individuals in their job search. We offer job readiness skills training, resume building, and job placement services. We also provide ongoing support to ensure that individuals are successful in their new job. We make sure that the job is sustainable and individuals are able to grow in their job.

Substance Use or Recurrence of Use

Substance use or recurrence of use is a major challenge that ex-offenders face during the reentry process. Many individuals who have been incarcerated have a history of substance use, and may have been living with an addiction while in prison. The lack of access to treatment and support while incarcerated can exacerbate the problem and make it even more difficult to overcome upon release.

Substance use not only affects the individual, but also their families and the community as a whole. It can lead to job loss, financial instability, and even criminal activity. It can also increase the likelihood of recidivism, as individuals may turn to it as a coping mechanism for the stress and trauma of reentry.

At Penny's recovery house, we recognize the importance of addressing substance use in the reentry process. We offer a variety of treatment options, including counseling, therapy, and support groups. We also provide access to medical professionals who can help individuals address any physical or mental health issues related to substance use. In addition to traditional treatment methods, we also offer alternative therapies such as yoga, meditation, and art therapy. These can be beneficial in helping individuals to cope with stress and trauma, and to develop healthier coping mechanisms.

We understand that overcoming substance use is a long-term process and requires a comprehensive approach. Our staff work closely with individuals to develop a personalized recovery plan that addresses not just the substance use itself, but also the underlying issues that may have contributed to it.
